I am Peter Elgie – your new friendly neighbourhood Golf Professional here at The Rock. This is my inaugural blog post.
This week, we are pleased to host the Ontario Junior Boys Golf Championship. The practice round was yesturday, and the tournament runs from today through Thursday. The format is 18 holes on the first two days for the field of 156 golfers, then 36 holes on Thursday for the low 60 who make the cut.
Please feel welcomed to come out and watch the best golfers in our province; some of whom you’ll inevitably end up watching on TV as professionals some day. I had the pleasure of meeting two contestants, Zack Mason and John Trevali, who are both young men who will contend for this year’s championship. They are two of many who will head south to play US NCAA Division 1 golf this fall. John will be attending Kent State, and Zack Eastern Michigan.
Past winners of the Ontario Junior include Gary Cowan (who won 2 US Amateur titles), Mike Weir, and Brennan Little (Mike’s longtime caddy) – both of whom played alongside me in 1987 when I led the tournament after the first round.
Perhaps we will see you this week.
